        Blepharoplasty: Overview

What Are the Different Types of Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, medically known as blepharoplasty, can rejuvenate both the upper and lower eyelid areas by removing excess fat, skin, and muscle tissue. The remaining skin is smoothed and tightened for a more youthful, refreshed appearance. The procedure can also be helpful for patients who experience sagging skin in the upper eyelids that is obstructing their field of vision.

Our surgeon performs upper and lower blepharoplasty, also known as upper eyelid lift.

        Upper Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery can be beneficial for patients wishing to reduce excess skin that is obstructing vision. This procedure is also helpful for rejuvenating areas around the eyes that may be giving you a tired, aged appearance. This procedure is often medically necessary, and covered by most insurances.

What Does the Blepharoplasty Procedure Entail?

Blepharoplasty procedures at Southwest Eye Institute are customized for each patient, and are designed to address the upper eyelids.   Some patients need the lid lifted.  This procedure is called

Upper eyelid surgery involves the removal of excess skin and then a tightening of the remainder. Remaining skin is lifted and reattached to give the area a more refreshed and youthful look. Residual scarring from this procedure are generally hidden in the crease of the upper lid.

A typical upper eyelid surgery is completed within 30 minutes.  If ptosis repair or lower lids need treatment, the procedure can last over an hour. The specific length of the operation is dependent on the details of your treatment plan, but eyelid surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and patients are able to return home the same day.

What Is Eyelid Surgery Recovery Like?

Once eyelid surgery is complete, your eyelids will be lubricated with a special antibiotic ointment. There will be some degree of bruising and swelling for a week or two after the procedure, and your eyes may feel sore or tight—however, any discomfort can be managed with applied ice packs. Please note that you may experience some temporary blurriness, excess tearing, and light sensitivity during recovery, but this will resolve over time.

You will likely be able to resume normal daily activities after a few days, and most patients can return to work a couple of days after the procedure, depending on your occupation. Additionally, you will be advised to avoid strenuous exercise/activities for a week and avoid eye rubbing.   Household activities such as reading, watching TV, or using the computer can usually be resumed almost immediately.

        How Long Does Blepharoplasty Last?

After the healing process is complete, many patients experience the effects of eyelid surgery for as long as 10-15 years, depending on the individual. With good skin care habits, the results can be preserved even longer.

        How Much Does Blepharoplasty Cost?

The average cost of eyelid surgery can vary, depending on your personalized treatment plan and individual insurance policy. There are a number of factors that can affect the overall cost, such as the amount of tissue that needs to be removed, as well as if any other procedure is needed in conjunction with the blepharoplasty. Additional considerations can include the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, prescribed medications, and facility fee.
